Today, Welsh Government has announced additional funding for Wales’ colleges - £13million in capital, and £4million in revenue.
ColegauCymru Chief Executive, David Hagendyk, said,
“We welcome this additional investment from the Welsh Government - a recognition that colleges across Wales are facing unprecedented financial challenges. This year, they have welcomed record numbers of young people applying and enrolling on full time courses, and it is essential that our colleges can support all learners with the next phase of their learning journey.
However, while today’s announcement is a recognition of the scale of the challenge, and is a move to protect learners, future skills, and Wales’ economy, the 2026/27 academic year will still be really difficult for colleges. Top of the in-tray for the next Welsh Government after May must be to reopen the books and to look again at the level of funding colleges will have for the new academic year.
Further education is uniquely positioned to respond to Wales’ business needs - today and in the future. Industry demands are rapidly changing, and colleges are fundamental to building the skilled workforce for our future. This additional funding will really help but it is only a partial solution to ensuring colleges can be financially sustainable and meet the needs of learners.”
