New data published by Medr shows a 12% drop in apprenticeship starts this quarter, compared with the same period last year.
ColegauCymru Chief Executive David Hagendyk said,
“The data is a stark reminder of the acute budget challenges facing colleges. The 12% reduction in apprenticeships starts means 960 missed opportunities for potential learners to benefit from an apprenticeship. In the construction sector, apprenticeship starts are down 22%, and whilst the NHS is in crisis and looking to build its workforce for the future, this data shows an 8% reduction in Healthcare and Public Services.
The data published by Medr today is deeply concerning, and underlines the devastating impact of apprenticeship funding cuts on Wales' economy and our most vulnerable communities. A strong apprenticeships programme is critical for Wales’ economic recovery, equipping individuals and businesses with the skills they need for success. Apprenticeships are fundamental to delivering green jobs and growth, and we urge the Welsh Government and Medr to carefully consider future budget decisions to ensure all learners have an opportunity to succeed”.
