Recognition of Prior Learning: Opening Doors for Adult Learners in Wales

#AdultLearnersWeek is a celebration of courage, ambition, and the power of second chances. Recognising prior learning and lived experiences of refugees and other learners who have made this country their home is crucial to removing barriers to education. By valuing what learners already know, we open doors to new opportunities, accelerate progress, and honour the diverse journeys that enrich our communities.

Shokhan Hasan is a shining example of resilience, dedication, and the transformative power of education. Her journey began in 2013 at Cardiff and Vale College, where she enrolled as a part-time learner on the ESOL programme.  By 2018, having successfully completed her studies, Shokhan advanced to the Level 2 Access to Further Studies course.

In 2019, Shokhan took the next step by enrolling in the Access to Higher Education course in Health Sciences. A key turning point in her journey was the awarding of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for her Level 2 maths units. Having already demonstrated competence through her Agored Cymru units, Shokhan was able to receive credit for prior achievement. The RPL not only acknowledged her previous hard work but also gave her the flexibility and confidence to succeed.

Despite English not being her first language, Shokhan’s proficiency grew steadily, culminating in well-crafted assignments that reflected her academic growth. Her journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, and the strategic support that RPL can offer learners who have already demonstrated capability.

Shokan said,

“I wouldn't be where I am today without all the teachers and staff in Cardiff and Vale College. I still remember all the kind support and encouraging words they gave me whenever I struggled.”

“I had lots of extremely difficult times during these years of my studies. Life always has unpredictable events for me…having small children and lacking family support can complicate life, especially when living abroad.  However, starting the Access course was one of my best decisions.”

We believe that every adult in Wales should have the opportunity to continuous learning throughout their lives, and Adult Learners’ Week gives us the opportunity to celebrate the courage, determination, and diversity of those who choose to learn at every stage of life. Their stories remind us that education is not bound by age or circumstance - it’s a lifelong journey, and every step forward deserves recognition.
