ColegauCymru has launched its #PoweringWales #SkillsPledge campaign, calling on MSs, MPs and other supporters to champion the vital role of skills and vocational education in driving Wales’ economic growth, productivity, and social mobility. The campaign coincides with the #WorldSkillsUK National Finals, taking place across South Wales colleges from 25 to 28 November, and aims to shine a spotlight on the talented young people shaping Wales’ future.
The Skills Pledge campaign urges policymakers to back five key priorities for a high-skill, fairer Wales:
- Parity for Vocational and Teachnical Skills
Give vocational and technical education the same status as academic routes - with a new Vocational Education and Training Strategy and Future Skills Authority to drive Wales towards a high-skill economy.
- Pathways for Every Young Person
Create a 14 - 19 Learning and Progression Pathway so every learner can access high-quality vocational options and take their first step into a rewarding career.
- Apprenticeships for Growth
Invest to deliver 125,000 apprenticeships - giving employers the skilled workforce they need and learners the opportunities they deserve.
- Higher Skills, Local Growth
Expand Level 4 - 5 provision in colleges to strengthen alternative routes into higher skills, supporting local and regional economic needs.
- A Lifelong Learning Guarantee
Introduce a universal entitlement to lifelong learning - helping adults to upskill, reskill, and build confidence at any stage of life.
As part of the campaign, ColegauCymru is encouraging supporters to take the #SkillsPledge by sharing photos or short videos on social media, using the campaign’s suggested captions and hashtags.
ColegauCymru Chief Executive, David Hagendyk, said,
“At a time when Wales faces significant economic challenges, investing in skills is investing in our nation’s future. The Skills Pledge is a call to action for everyone who believes in the power of education to transform lives and communities. By backing these priorities, we can build a fairer, more prosperous Wales for all.”
