Female learners at Cardiff and Vale College were given a unique opportunity to engage with senior women leaders from across politics, public affairs and communications at an inspiring Speed Mentoring event hosted by ColegauCymru and Women in Public Affairs Cymru (WiPA) yesterday.

Held at the College’s Y Dosbarth restaurant, the event brought together learners with an impressive panel of mentors who shared their personal career journeys, challenges and advice on leadership, representation and building confidence.

The mentoring panel featured Baroness Carmen Smith, the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Vikki Howells MS; Heledd Fychan MS; Nerys Evans, Director of Cavendish Consulting; Clare Jones, Grasshopper Communications; and Carolyn Harris MP, Deputy Leader of Welsh Labour. Through a series of fast-paced, small-group conversations, learners were able to ask questions, gain insight into a wide range of career pathways and hear first-hand what it takes to succeed in public life.

Throughout the session, mentors emphasised the importance of believing in yourself, taking chances and not being afraid to step forward into leadership roles. Learners were encouraged to recognise their own potential and to see representation as a powerful force for change.

ColegauCymru Director of Policy and Public Affairs, Rachel Cable, said,

“Today’s event was hugely inspiring, and a brilliant opportunity for the colleges’ learners to speak directly with women who are leading figures in Wales’ politics, public affairs and communications helping to break down barriers and build confidence. The message from our mentors was clear - believe in yourself, take opportunities when they arise, and don’t be afraid to aim high. I can’t wait to see what our learners do next on their learning journeys.”

Cardiff and Vale College Principal, Sharon James, added,

“We were proud to host this inspiring event and give our learners the chance to hear directly from such influential women. The conversations encouraged confidence, ambition and belief in their own potential.”

The Speed Mentoring event reflects ColegauCymru’s ongoing commitment to supporting equality, diversity and representation, and to creating opportunities that help learners develop the confidence and ambition to pursue leadership roles in their future careers.

ColegauCymru would like to thank WiPA Cymru, Cardiff and Vale College, and all panel members for their contribution to a powerful and memorable event.
